The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has shifted its stance towards startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), aiming to foster space technology innovation. Despite previous reluctance, ISRO is now actively engaging with private players in the space sector, aligning with the government’s recent decision to open up India’s space industry to private participation.
ARISE Program and SEED Initiative
Under the Atal Innovation Mission ARISE program, ISRO recently announced three new challenges focused on propulsion, geospatial information, and robotics/AR/VR. The agency has received over 200 proposals for these challenges, signaling a growing interest from startups and MSMEs in contributing to space technology advancement.
Additionally, ISRO has launched the Space Enterprise Encouragement and Development (SEED) program. SEED aims to provide early-stage support to innovative small businesses and startups interested in developing products or services related to space technology. ISRO Chairman and Department of Space (DoS) Secretary, K. Sivan, highlighted SEED as a competitive initiative to nurture entrepreneurship in the space sector.
Future Collaborations and Mentorship
During an ISRO workshop, Sivan emphasized the role of the private sector as a ‘co-traveller’ in space endeavors. He hinted at future challenges and collaborations, including planetary missions, indicating ISRO’s commitment to further engage with startups and MSMEs.
Moreover, DoS plans to compile a catalog of potential space technology products and services that can be developed by the industry. This initiative aims to expand the scope of innovation and entrepreneurship in the space domain. Additionally, ISRO is initiating mechanisms for technical mentorship from DoS to support startups and MSMEs in their space technology pursuits.
ISRO’s proactive approach towards collaboration with startups and MSMEs reflects a strategic shift towards leveraging private sector capabilities for space technology innovation. By fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship and providing support through initiatives like ARISE and SEED, ISRO aims to accelerate India’s progress in space exploration and technology development.
