Introduction to the Project
Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin marks the first branch of the renowned coffee chain in the Kyushu region. Situated in the Tenjin area of Fukuoka city, the cafe occupies a unique location within the precincts of the Kego Shrine. With one side facing a bustling street and the other opening onto the serene shrine approach, the cafe is poised to connect the contrasting elements of “city” and “shrine.”
Spatial Design Approach
In designing a space that harmonizes with this duality, the architects focused on creating a visual transition from the busy street to the tranquil shrine approach. Placing the kitchen at the center of the interior, they organized functions such as the drink counter and storage around it, establishing a symbolic focal point reminiscent of Blue Bottle’s identity. This central arrangement visually links the pathways around the cafe, symbolizing the connection between the city and the shrine.
Addressing Height Differences
A notable feature of the site was the height difference of approximately 50cm between the shrine approach and the street. To address this, the architects strategically raised the height towards the shrine, creating a dynamic space with standing areas on the street side and a more relaxed atmosphere with sofa spaces towards the shrine.
Material Selection and Atmosphere
Extruded cement panels, commonly used in urban architecture, were chosen as the main material to evoke an urban ambiance. These panels were stained in a light beige tone while retaining their texture, creating harmony with the shrine’s surroundings. Additionally, walnut wood was incorporated to add warmth and depth to the cafe’s atmosphere, resulting in a subtle gradient that enhances the overall aesthetic.
Conclusion: A Sanctuary for Both City Dwellers and Shrine Visitors
Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin, designed by CASE-REAL, serves as a gentle link between the bustling city and the serene shrine, offering a sanctuary where people from both aspects of life can come together to enjoy quality coffee in a harmonious environment.
