Exploring Solar Interplay
Stephanie Deumer’s Under the Same Sun Installation, showcased at Desert X AlUla 2022 in Saudi Arabia, delves into the intricate relationship among sunlight, its physical manifestations, and the resulting energy, imagery, and structures. This multimedia creation by Canadian artist Stephanie Deumer immerses viewers in a subterranean realm featuring a greenhouse filled with indigenous plants.
Multimedia Spectacle
As an extension of the artist’s fascination with simulacra and immersive settings, this installation vividly depicts the marvels of biological reproduction using modern technological and visual techniques. Live-feed projections of the surrounding landscape illuminate the greenhouse, facilitating photosynthesis and the growth of the plants within.
Solar-Powered Brilliance
The installation’s video projections and overall functioning rely on solar panels, doubling as the roof of the sunken chamber. These panels, resembling a large water puddle blending into the desert floor, symbolize a mirage and subtly allude to the concealed sanctuary below.
Authenticity in Design
The structural elements, including gabion walls filled with local stones, an adobe bench, and steel beams, embody a raw, minimalist aesthetic that authentically reflects their construction and utilitarian purpose. The visible power unit within the space serves as a focal point, symbolizing the vitality of the solar energy system.
Environmental Haven
Beyond its artistic significance, the installation acts as a sanctuary for delicate plant life, offering a cool and inviting retreat for visitors traversing the arid desert landscape to engage with the exhibition. Under the Same Sun invites contemplation on the interplay between nature, technology, and human perception.
