Introduction to the Project

The Warrnambool Learning and Library Centre, designed by Kosloff Architecture, replaces the former local library with a larger, more accessible space within Warrnambool’s CDB. Situated on the South West TAFE campus, this project caters to both the local community and South West TAFE students and staff, offering modern amenities and collaborative spaces.

Collaborative Vision and Conceptual Framework

The project embodies a partnership between the Victorian Government, South West TAFE, and Warrnambool City Council, aiming to integrate education, community, and the arts. Extensive public consultation shaped the conceptual framework, focusing on key pillars such as delight, history, heritage, narrative, and the creation of a third place for social interaction and idea exchange.

Architectural Elements and Integration

The design features a new 3-storey contemporary building linked to the refurbished 1868 Orderly Room, a heritage-listed structure. A glazed linkway serves as a laneway, facilitating pedestrian flow and delineating the old and new structures. A “bridge” connects the first-floor level, offering views and performance spaces, seamlessly blending historical elements with modern functionality.

Curated Views and Environmental Considerations

The curved façade of the contemporary building offers panoramic views of Warrnambool and the ocean, enhancing the overall experience. Precast concrete elements define the architectural language while regulating daylight and shading. The interiors reflect the CBD grid and the coffered ceiling of the Orderly Room, establishing a visual and spatial connection between the new and heritage buildings.

Sustainability and Environmental Impact

The project prioritizes sustainability through adaptive reuse of materials, long-life building materials, and landscaping that supports local biodiversity. Rain gardens are integrated to manage water sustainably, contributing to the site’s ecological balance and long-term sustainability.

Conclusion: Harmonizing Heritage and Modernity

The Warrnambool Learning and Library Centre stands as a testament to harmonizing heritage preservation with contemporary design and functionality. By creating dynamic spaces for learning, collaboration, and community engagement, the project enriches the urban fabric while minimizing its environmental footprint.
