Celebrating Alpine Heritage and Innovation
Snøhetta was commissioned to design the “Top of Alpbachtal” viewing tower atop the Hornbahn 2000 chairlift service room, marking the tenth anniversary of the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski resort. The project aimed to replace an outdated ski lift with a modern landmark that enriches the mountain experience for visitors. Inspired by Alpine building traditions, the 13-meter-high timber tower reflects a blend of heritage and contemporary design.
Sustainable Timber Construction
The design concept emphasizes resource conservation and sustainability by incorporating traditional construction methods into a modern interpretation. Patrick Lüth, Partner and Managing Director of Snøhetta Studio Innsbruck, highlights the use of locally handmade shingles and a narrowing structure that pays homage to the region’s architectural heritage while harmonizing with the alpine landscape.
Panoramic Room and Tyrolean Influences
The tower features a panoramic room accessible to skiers, snowshoe walkers, ski tourers, and hikers, offering breathtaking views of the surroundings. Drawing inspiration from Tyrolean farmhouse parlors, the design includes wooden wall paneling reminiscent of traditional parlors on the lower level, while the upper part showcases an open roof structure, symbolizing agricultural building traditions.
Embracing Informal Gathering Spaces
An informal seating landscape within the panoramic room invites visitors to relax in freely accessible seating areas and wooden platforms. The space, sheltered from the wind yet unheated, encourages everyone to take a break without the need for consumption. Large panorama windows flood the area with natural light, offering expansive views of the picturesque scenery.
Keyless Shelter Structure and Panoramic Views
The viewing tower, a keyless structure, aligns with alpine shelter traditions adaptable for use in both summer and winter. At the tower’s peak, visitors can savor a 360-degree panoramic view of the alpine landscape, enveloped in the fresh mountain air. The tower’s design harmoniously complements the surrounding landscape, creating an ensemble that integrates seamlessly into its environment.
