NAAW proudly presents FIKA, a recent endeavor nestled within the historic TurkSib Railway Workers’ House in Almaty, Kazakhstan. As a relic of the Soviet era, the TurkSib Railway Workers’ House bears witness to the region’s industrial legacy and architectural heritage. With FIKA, our aim transcends mere creation; we strive to engage in a profound dialogue with the building’s rich historical tapestry.
Unveiling the Past
In the process of demolition, a treasure trove of original plasterwork was unearthed, including intricate ceiling moldings and capitals concealed beneath suspended panels. Recognizing their historical significance, we made a deliberate choice to preserve and prominently feature these elements in the design. This preservation serves as a poignant metaphor for unraveling the past, as the preserved Soviet-national style moldings from 1953 now harmonize with the modern structural concrete, symbolizing the delicate balance between historical preservation and contemporary aesthetics embodied within FIKA.
Blurring Boundaries: Interior and Cityscape
To seamlessly integrate FIKA with its urban milieu, we replaced plastic angular windows with wooden metal frames, flooding the space with natural light and offering guests panoramic views of the cityscape. This architectural intervention blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, fostering a sense of continuity and engagement with the urban environment.
Spatial Harmony and Functionality
FIKA’s layout is thoughtfully divided into functional zones while maintaining an open and fluid ambiance. From the central bakery display to the communal tables and cozy seating areas, each space is meticulously curated to cater to diverse needs and interactions. Noteworthy is the playful toilet corridor, adorned with a checkerboard pattern to transform a narrow space into a whimsical visual experience.
Fusion of Local Craftsmanship and International Design
The majority of FIKA’s furniture is bespoke, crafted by local artisans using locally sourced materials, with sustainability at the forefront. Recycled plastic tables coexist harmoniously with Danish-designed pieces, seamlessly integrating international design with local craftsmanship. Art installations within FIKA further enrich the narrative, reflecting both urban ethos and cultural heritage.
A Seamless Extension of Almaty’s Spirit
FIKA epitomizes our commitment to creating culturally vibrant spaces that seamlessly blend history and modernity. By honoring the legacy of the TurkSib Railway Workers’ House and embracing the dynamic essence of Almaty, FIKA invites guests on a journey of culinary delight intertwined with architectural reverence.
