Introduction and Context
MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, collaborated with Guangdong Nanhai Art Field to create an art installation named “Timeless Beacon” in Taiping Xu, Nanhai, Guangdong province of China. This initiative aimed to revitalize Taiping market, once a thriving hub during the late Ming Dynasty and the subsequent centuries. However, changing urban dynamics and the advent of the internet era led to its gradual decline, leaving behind a picturesque but deserted landscape.
Evoking Vitality and Rebirth
The essence of the project was to infuse vitality and a sense of rebirth into the abandoned Taiping market. Ma Yansong envisioned harnessing the natural growth observed amidst the ruins, symbolizing new energy and perception emerging from old structures. This approach sought to foster a fresh understanding of time and space, revitalizing the area’s historical significance.
Blending Past with Future: Design Concept
The architectural intervention by MAD Architects involved wrapping a three-story building in reflective film, creating a blurry yet reflective façade that mirrors the surrounding old streets. This design choice aimed to seamlessly integrate the structure with its historical context while adding a contemporary touch. Additionally, a multimedia light device adorned with colorful delicate cloth pieces atop the building serves as a modern-day “lighthouse,” casting a dreamy aura along the riverside, especially at night.
Embracing Imagination and Timelessness
The juxtaposition of the quiet village setting against the backdrop of a bustling city across the river adds a layer of contrast and intrigue to the installation. By blurring the lines between past and present, MAD Architects intended to evoke emotions and inspiration that transcend mere functionality, creating a timeless experience that invites visitors to engage with history, imagination, and the evolving landscape.
Conclusion and Duration of Exhibition
