Renovation and Mezzanine Addition
Bistro Me&Island, a project by Atelier [inter] Island, involves the transformation of an old warehouse near the Zhengbin harbor into a vibrant restaurant and wine bar. Central to the design is the addition of a mezzanine level within the double-height space, offering panoramic views of the scenic fishing port.
Design Principles: Ocean View
The guiding principle of the design is the “ocean view,” ensuring that every aspect of the space maximizes its connection to the picturesque surroundings. Through careful massing, recessed corridors, and material textures, the interior atmosphere evokes the feeling of being in a semi-outdoor setting, with a constant visual link to the sea.
Time Traces and Minimalist Aesthetics
To honor the heritage of the old warehouse, minimalist massing and lines are incorporated, highlighting the “time traces” of the building’s history. In the afternoon, natural light floods the space, creating a transparent and lively ambiance accentuated by ample windows and strategically placed glass elements.
Dynamic Transformations: Day to Night
As day transitions into night, the atmosphere of Bistro Me&Island undergoes a dynamic transformation. Clever lighting arrangements, including LED strips, imbue the space with a different energy, offering patrons a distinct experience compared to daytime visits. This nighttime ambiance adds to the allure of the bistro by the fishing port, reflecting the unique island lifestyle of Heping Island.
