As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to pose a threat in India, a recent report suggests that the majority of Indians are opting to celebrate the New Year within the safety of their homes, with immediate family members. Here’s a breakdown of the findings:
Home Celebrations Preferred
According to the report, approximately 8 out of 10 individuals are inclined to welcome the New Year within the confines of their homes, adhering to the advice provided by state governments against organizing or attending large gatherings. This cautious approach reflects a collective effort to mitigate the risk of Covid-19 transmission.
Limited Participation in Public Events
Merely 4 percent of citizens expressed intentions to partake in significant gatherings such as parties or community get-togethers to mark the onset of the New Year. The overwhelming majority, comprising 79 percent of respondents, indicated a preference for staying home and either celebrating with immediate family members or refraining from celebrations altogether.
Socializing Plans
While 12 percent of individuals plan to visit a friend’s residence for New Year festivities, a notable portion, constituting 5 percent, intends to abstain from socializing entirely due to the heightened risk posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. These cautious measures underscore a prudent approach adopted by the populace amidst prevailing health concerns.
Adherence to Covid Protocols
Recognizing the ongoing threat of Covid-19, particularly in densely populated urban areas, the report emphasizes the importance of adhering to Covid-appropriate norms. Regardless of state or district mandates, individuals celebrating in big cities are urged to practice masking and social distancing diligently to mitigate the risk of virus transmission.
Government Guidelines
In response to the prevailing health crisis, several state governments have issued guidelines aimed at regulating New Year celebrations. Recommendations include conducting large gatherings strictly outdoors, preferably during daylight hours, to minimize the risk of exposure. Additionally, vulnerable demographics such as individuals over 60 years, those with underlying health conditions, pregnant, and lactating women are advised to refrain from attending public gatherings.
Restrictions on Commercial Establishments
Authorities have imposed restrictions on commercial establishments such as hotels, pubs, restaurants, clubs, and resorts hosting New Year events. These establishments are required to limit the number of guests in adherence to existing seating capacities, particularly for indoor gatherings, to ensure compliance with Covid safety protocols.
Covid Situation Update
Despite efforts to contain the spread of the virus, India reported 243 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry’s latest update. While this marks a slight decrease from the previous day’s tally of 268 cases, it underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and adherence to precautionary measures to combat the pandemic effectively.
