WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that enhances the group video call experience for its users. Similar to Discord calls, this feature allows users to join and leave ongoing group calls at any time, making the process more flexible and convenient. Alongside this update, WhatsApp has also revamped the call screen to provide more information about the participants and additional functionalities.
Joining Ongoing Group Calls Midway
With this new feature, WhatsApp users can now rejoin a group call even after it has already begun. Previously, if a participant left or was disconnected from the call, they would need to be re-added by other participants. However, the updated feature allows users to seamlessly return to the group call as long as it is still active. Ongoing group calls will be displayed prominently at the top of the calls tab, indicating whether it is a video or voice call. Users can simply tap on the ongoing call to join, even if they missed the initial invitation. Additionally, participants can leave and rejoin the call at their convenience.
Enhanced Convenience and Functionality
This new feature brings added convenience to WhatsApp group calls, addressing common issues such as call drops. Users no longer need to go through the hassle of re-adding participants who have been disconnected. The concept of joinable calls is not new and is already utilized by platforms like Discord, Instagram, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. WhatsApp’s adoption of this feature reflects a commitment to improving the user experience and staying competitive in the messaging app landscape.
Redesigned Call Info Screen
In addition to the joinable group calls feature, WhatsApp has updated the call info screen for group calls. Users now have the option to either ‘ignore’ or ‘open’ the group call. Choosing ‘open’ expands the call screen, providing access to the camera and displaying a list of participants who have joined or are yet to join the call. This call info screen is accessible during the ongoing call, offering users more control and visibility over the call’s participants and settings.
Overall, these updates aim to enhance the functionality and usability of WhatsApp group calls, catering to the evolving needs of its diverse user base.
