WhatsApp is set to introduce yet another feature reminiscent of Snapchat, further expanding its array of ephemeral messaging options. Following the addition of statuses and disappearing messages, the platform is now gearing up to roll out Disappearing Mode, offering users an alternative to Snapchat.
Embracing Ephemeral Messaging
In a recent WhatsApp group chat with WABetaInfo, WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a host of upcoming features slated for the messaging service’s future development.
Disappearing Mode is poised to transform WhatsApp into a Snapchat replacement, allowing users to send messages that vanish after being viewed by recipients. Unlike the current setup, where users have to enable disappearing messages for individual chats, Disappearing Mode will enable this feature by default for all individual and group chats. Similar functionality, known as Vanish Mode, is already available on Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
Zuckerberg also disclosed details about another feature called ‘View Once’, which will enable users to send photos and videos that disappear after being viewed by the recipient.
Multi-Device Support on the Horizon
Multi-device support has long been a highly requested feature on WhatsApp. While the existing WhatsApp Web feature partially addresses the need for multi-device functionality, it falls short of offering a comprehensive solution.
WhatsApp is now on the verge of introducing true multi-device support, according to Cathcart and Zuckerberg. This feature, expected to roll out to WhatsApp beta users within the next month or two, will enable users to remain logged in on multiple devices simultaneously. This functionality, akin to Telegram’s approach, will provide greater flexibility for users. Additionally, Cathcart confirmed that iPad support will be included, allowing users to connect up to four devices concurrently.
Ongoing Development of Additional Features
In addition to Disappearing Mode and multi-device support, WhatsApp is actively working on various other features to enhance the user experience.
Some users on WhatsApp beta for Android will soon have access to a sticker shortcut positioned next to the smiley button, simplifying the process of adding stickers to chats.
Furthermore, WhatsApp is exploring the integration of voice and video calls on the web, as well as collaboration with JioMart and other initiatives aimed at expanding the platform’s capabilities and utility for users.
