WhatsApp is currently in the testing phase for a new feature called “message reactions.” While this feature is not novel in the world of messaging apps, as it is already available on platforms like Messenger, iMessage, Twitter, and Instagram DM, WhatsApp is now exploring its implementation.

Functionality and Expectations

Message reactions on WhatsApp are anticipated to function similarly to those on other apps such as Messenger and Twitter. Users will have the ability to react to messages using emojis, with options likely including heart, laugh, angry, smile, like, or dislike. While the exact appearance of message reactions on WhatsApp remains undisclosed, WABetaInfo has confirmed that the feature is undergoing testing. A screenshot shared by the blog displayed a message stating, “You received a reaction. Update your version of WhatsApp to see reactions.”

This notification appears when a user’s WhatsApp version does not support the feature, indicating that WhatsApp is indeed testing message reactions. Further developments on this feature are expected in the coming weeks, with a potential rollout to WhatsApp beta users, consistent with the platform’s approach to testing upcoming features.

Expansion of WhatsApp Features

The introduction of message reactions aligns with WhatsApp’s pattern of continuously introducing new features and conducting experiments. Recent additions to the platform include features like disappearing photos and videos, as well as joinable missed group calls. These features are now available to all WhatsApp users on both Android and iOS platforms.

Moreover, WhatsApp has initiated testing for significant features such as chat history transfer from iOS to Android and multi-device support. These developments mark significant milestones for WhatsApp, reflecting the platform’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and functionality.
